Park and ride? 19/12/2001 Blakey and Butler
ROUGHYEDS officials are urging fans to use the club’s park-and-ride scheme when they go to Ashton on Sunday for the Oldham–Hornets derby at Hurst Cross.

"Some officials have expressed safety fears about the latest pictures they had seen of fans already setting off for the game"
Tameside Council are adamant that disruption to local residents is kept to a minimum.

Fans are asked to park on the Union Street, Camp Street and Henrietta Street town-centre car parks — at a cost of £1 for the day — and then use free double-deck Bluebird buses to drive to the ground.

They will leave the three car parks at ten-minute intervals, starting about 75 minutes before kick-off.

The buses will take fans back to the car parks after the game, picking up and dropping off at the same points.

Tameside Council are asking fans to use the following routes:

l VIA Ashton Road– Oldham Road (A627): Left at Wellington Road (A670) towards Ashton town centre. Left into Camp Street (opposite council offices) and then left into Henrietta Street. Union Street is first left and car park is on the left.

2 VIA Abbeyhills Road and Lees New Road (B6194): Rright at signal-controlled junction, into Ashton town centre, at Mossley Road (A670). Follow A670 along Penny Meadow. Right into Camp Street (opposite council offices) and then left into Henrietta Street. Union Street is first left and car park is on left.

There is another car park off Crickets Lane (on the east side of Ashton town centre), near to the memorial gardens and the telephone exchange roundabout, but this will not be served by park-and-ride.

Nearer to the ground, there will be parking for only 60 cars at St Christopher’s RC Church, at a cost of £3 per car.

In addition, the Roughyeds have arranged for double-deck buses to leave the Black Horse, Ripponden Road at 2.15pm and the club shop on Union Street at 2.30pm.

They will return to their pick-up points straight after the game.

The return fare is £1.50 (no concessions) and bookings can be made on a first come, first served basis on 628 3677.

Said Roughyeds chairman Christopher Hamilton: “To help the club, it is vital that spectators use the services provided so as not to disturb local residents.

“There will be a residents-only parking scheme in operation and we are asking our supporters to show the utmost respect to local residents.”
