London bid for Sculthorpe! : Gareth Walker reports in the Rugby League Express Hornets have turned down an offer from London Broncos for their young prop Danny Sculthorpe. The Broncos made a bid for 22 year old Sculthorpe last week, but Hornets' chairman Ray Taylor has confirmed that it was rejected. The Broncos may now make a fresh bid for a player that has been linked with Wigan, Leeds and Halifax. "I think he's a player everyone in Super League is keen on and we're certainly one of those people," Broncos' official Nic Cartwright said last night. "I think we will speak to Rochdale again, although I'm not sure whether we will change our position." Sculthorpe, 22, is currently on tour in South Africa with the England under-21s squad, and featured in their win yesterday. "Danny is certainly one of the best young players in the country," Hornets' chairman Taylor said. "Last week we received a bid from a Super League club but we have turned that bid down." COMMENT: It's interesting to see the scrum of Super League clubs pitching for Scully's talents. It's understandable that the likes of Wigan and Leeds would want his not insubstantial abilities within their ranks. The guy's class - the finest ball handling prop in the game bar none. What's less understandable is why cannon-fodder Super League clubs like Halifax and London think that he'd consider a move to them a step up. This time last week Halifax were on the verge of surrendering their Super League place to swap fixtures with Huddersfield Midgets. And as for London, they've got no ground, no supporters and no-hope of challenging for the Super League title. Playing for them would be tantamount to playing in a Rugby league backwater. We know that Danny's going to go on and follow his brother onto the world Rugby League stage, but he's better off staying at Hornets until the right opportunity comes along. And if we're lucky it might be a month or two yet. | |||
