Oldham homeless 10/11/2001 In the News
The Oldham caravan once again hits the road.

Oldham Roughyeds are homeless only three weeks before the start of the new Premiership season on December 2.

They were expected to play at the Boundary Park home of the town's football club but talks over rental terms have ended in deadlock.

Their football neighbours were taken over recently by businessman Chris Moore and a new management team was put in place.

"The future of professional rugby league in Oldham is now in grave danger," said rugby club chairman Chris Hamilton.

It was revealed that the rugby league club and the local council had jointly offered £100,000 for the hire of the ground in the coming season.

Councillor Chris Hilyer, deputy leader of the council, said: "We considered this to be a generous offer but it was unacceptable to the football club.

"However, we are not prepared to stand back and see the demise of rugby league in the town. We will be giving the rugby club all the support we can."

Club officials set to work immediately in a bid to find a new ground and Hamilton was due to have urgent talks with the Rugby Football League.

He added: "Talks have been going on with the council and with Oldham Athletic for nine weeks. We were asked to pay an increased rent of more than 500 per cent on previous seasons.

"We even indicated to Oldham council that we were prepared to fold the club if we were again forced out of town but with the council's backing and the loyal support of our fans we're now determined to continue to fly the flag of Oldham Rugby League Club.

"We are, however, in a very serious situation. It's like David and Goliath with Oldham Athletic and their wealthy owner playing the role of Goliath.

"People should be aware that the idea of Boundary Park being redeveloped as a joint-use stadium has now gone and all council support has gone with it."
