With the minor premiership (i.e. the league) already wrapped up, last week's
result at Workington suggests that Leigh might be holding back for a real big
tilt at the playoffs. And I wouldn't blame Paul Terzis one bit. With Widnes
coming into real contenders' form, I'm not sure that I'd risk my best 13 in
the run-in. The Leigh side comes packed with quality. New Lancashire cap Neil Turley has shattered records this season, even audaciously topping his origin debut with a try for good measure. His dad must be gutted, though, that he shows no aptitude for the drop goal. Up front, cantankerous old warhorse Tim Street keeps rumbling on - upsetting defences and supporters alike with his no-nonsense, blockbusting style. What people neglect to mention when talking of Streety, though, is that he has a more than useful offloading game and if he gets his hands free in the tackle, his neat passing can open up defences. In the second row Chris Morley has been showing the sort of form that gets you into the Rugby League World team of the month while Dave Whittle has been warned this week about his over enthusiastic use of the elbow, escaping a ban by the skin of his teeth. This Sunday's game is a yardstick for how far Hornets have really come since Leigh tonked us way back in the wilds of winter. We didn't perform at all that day - mainly because Leigh didn't let us and they remain the best side I've seen in the NFP this term. And this one's had a 'big game' build up. The feeling around the club is that this is a game that really matters if we are to place a serious bid for playoff credibility. Martin Hall will need all of his coaching and motivational nous if we are to register an upset. On our day we can play fluid, clinical football- unfortunately, as Hally has pointed out this week - we've struggled to keep the screw turned for a full 80 minutes, switching off once we've got our noses in front or lacking concentrated intensity on defence. Against most of the sides in this division we can get away with that, but Leigh will punish you big style for the slightest lapse. If we play to our fullest potential, we have a real chance. And as games - and potential points - rapidly run out, we need to grab every one we can. This will be a big afternoon. If you haven't got your ticket for the main stand, get one as soon as you can. You'd be mad to miss it. | |||
