Hornets U21's 18 Widnes U21’s 36
Hornets first season in the Senior Academy first division ended with a defeat to a highly skilful Widnes Team but that result should not mask the fact that is has been an extremely successful venture for the Club and a mid table finish is highly creditable and speaks volumes about the Players and Coaching Staff in this inaugural season. Hornets scored first when Eric Johnson again scored a superb individual try the Widnes defence unable to read his quick feet and step, Sneyd added the goal to give Hornets a 6-0 lead.
Widnes dominated the remainder of the first half with Richard Myler from the Myler Family dynasty dominating the mid field. Myler himself scored a first half try but Hornets did manage to score again before the interval when centre James Whalley scored in the corner the try was improved due to a superb touch line kick from Sneyd. The half time score was 12 – 18.
Widnes scored three tries early in the second half to effectively end the game as a contest but as they have done all season Hornets dug in and some superb last ditch defence prevented Widnes from running away with the game.
Fittingly Eric Johnson scored Hornets last try of the season with yet another darting run up the middle of the field, Sneyd added the conversion to make the final score 18 – 36.
Hornet’s next task now will be to secure some of the U21’S squad on Professional forms and in doing so keep the nucleolus of the squad together for 2008.
