Barrow preview 21/07/2005 Jim
Sunday's Coming!
Peter Roe brings his beleaguered Barrow Raiders to Spotland amidst a player exodus. An increasing number of West Yorkshire-based players found the travelling just too much - and the latest one through the exit door is stand-off Adrian Mulcahy who has three clubs(including Hunslet) sniffing around him.

This instability in Roe’s small squad sees the Raiders four points adrift at the foot of NL1 with just two points - gained in a game that we really don’t want to talk about here...

But last week’s blank weekend should give Roe some hope that influential half-back Darren Holt and prop Ryan Tandy have had time to recover from niggling injuries - ankle and back respectively.

As many Barrow coaches have done before him, Roe has dipped into the local amateur game to strengthen his squad, with former Askam prop Jamie Butler and Walney Central second rower Ryan Wood now settled in the team.

Elsewehere, French international Freddie Zitter pairs off with former Swinton centre Jason Roach - so there’s plenty of pace and experience in the threequarters.

Last time out, Barrow sank to a depressing 40-18 home defeat to Batley - made more so by the fact that scores were tied at 18-all at half time, but Roe remains defiantly optimistic about the spectre of relegation. “The way (the table) is shaping up above us, the chance is there for us to get out. We can rescue the situation and, as long as we can it will be my aim to get out of the relegation zone.”

But not if Bobbie has anything to to with it. With livewire Warrington scrum-half Jamie Durbin drafted in as cover and confidence on a high after the side’s spectacular defeat of some team from Yorkshire, it could be payback time for Barrow.

With the injury to the Bobster’s still under scrutiny by the medics, he’s joined on the sidelines by Paul Anderson who has received a somewhat harsh two game ban for daring to stand-up to Castleford’s underhand sledging tactics.

Otherwise, it’ll be much as we were as we go in search of two vital points. With Doncaster at Hull Kingston Rovers, we have a great chance to close the gap on them to just one point - and with a trip to Doncaster yet to come, it gives us a real shot at hoisting ourselves up the table and consolidating a place in the playoff positions. And with Oldham at Casttleford, it could open up the gap on them to four points.

With no disrespect to Barrow, they’re unlikely to bring a stand-ful of fans , so it’s up to us to make the numbers and the noise on Sunday. The club has earmarked the game as one of our key ‘promotional’ games, with family tickets and hundreds of free tickets distributed to those who might not usually come to a game - so let’s all chip in to make it a great afternoon.

If you can, bring a mate. Wear your Hornets colours with pride and let’s create an atmosphere that gives the lads a big lift. The support against Castleford was superb - and if we can replicate this on Sunday our ‘extra man’ can make a real difference.

With lots of home games in the run-in, every single one counts. Starting with this Sunday.

We owe Barrow one - and it’ll be a cracker. See you there.
