Sunday's Coming
Keighley have had a good month since we met in the Late Trains Cup six whole weeks ago.
A fortnight ago they sent a jolt through the National League with an astonishing 26-8 win over parachute pariahs Halifax. If that’s not impressive enough, the fact that they kept Halifax off the score board for the last hour of the game speaks volumes for the tenacity of their defence.
Then last week they went up to Workington and nailed 30-odd points on the hosts - never an easy task up in Cumbria.
Leading the revival at Lawkholme Lane are former ATC player of the round Danny Ekis and livewire hooker Simeon Hoyle - who seems to be taking over where Jason Ramshaw left off. And while prop Ekis leads the pack from the front, Hoyle’s quite happy to boss the game from acting half and collect the tries. Indeed his running from behind the play-the ball was a key factor in the win in Cumbria. Definitely one to watch there.
But Keighley aren’t a double act with a supporting cast. Gary Moorby’s put together a side big on durability and error-free football - two of the attributes that’ll take you a long way in NL1. Indeed, a look at the stats shows that the Keighley side thrives against sides whose discipline lets them down.
As Halifax lost their heads, the Cougars kept the game straight and simple and conceded just one penalty in the second half. Last week they happily capitalised on Workington coughing up a 2:1 penalty ratio to wrest the game from their opponents.
Indeed, Gary Moorby will have noted Hornets penalty stat from last week with interest. 12-5 over the 80 minutes and 8-1 for the second half looks like food and drink for Keighley, so a disciplined, low-error performance will provide a good starting point for Bobbie Goulding.
Hopefully a week of bollocking and some heavy sessions on the tackle bags will put some steel back into a Hornets side that looked lacklustre at best last week. Bizarrely, though, on the rare occasions when Hornets played a bit of rugby at Borrowed Park, we came up with tries - so a bit more of that will be high on the priorities list.
There’s no doubt that the pack looks like it could stand up to (almost) any in NL1, but - despite the obvious ability in the side - Hornets still struggle to fire at half back. One thing that is certain, though is - no matter how badly we play, we look much better with Tommy Hodgkinson on the field. His no-nonsense aggressive go-forward should be the template for the team and once we start backing him up in numbers, we should begin to reap rewards.
Ultimately, last week’s game was a write-off. All we learned was that if you play badly, you’ll lose - so let’s use that as catharsis and start again with determination.
From day one we knew that this season was going to challenge the faith of even the hardiest believer, but we all have to battle through together. We need the lads to gel and play well, but they need us to back them to the hilt and show them that what they do really matters.
We’re still coming together as a club - but to succeed we have to stick together, whatever.
So let’s put last week behind us and move on. Get yourself over to Keighley and give the lads all the support you can. They need it. You need it. You know it makes sense. See you there.
