Sunday's coming
Time for some Northern Exposure as we head up to Workington this
weekend.
ToWn has been a club in deep trouble this last year or so. Since the
heady
days of Super League, they've been if freefall, but signs are that they
might well have arrested the slide.
Despite the defeat at Chorley last week, confidence is high behind the
scenes at Derwent Park with the promise of four new directors going in
to
put the club back on its feet.
On the field, coach Paul Penrice has problems, though. Having gone to
Whitehaven the other week with just 16 players, they then went to
Victory
park to give Chorley a much needed win.
But Penrice has been busy tapping the local amateur talent Barrow-based
Roose Pioneers half back Danny Burns has joined the club on a trial
basis
and he joins James Robinson who's played this season for Wath Brow
Hornets.
Also in the squad are Tony Dymtrowski (ex-Egremont) and Graeme
Lewthwaite -
both of whom will get you 38 at Scrabble.
The backline is shored up by local legend Kevin Hetherington (who
pulled a
muscle in the warm-up last week) and out-half Brett Smith (who left eh
field with a dead-leg last week).
As usual, we expect a big, uncompromising Cumbrian Pack - watch out for
Hitro Okesene, who seems to just go on for ever.
Undoubted star of the ToWn side is hooker Carl Sice. His non-stop
workrate,
excellent hands and great reading of the game make him a danger. Indeed
League Express las week gave him the man of the match award in defeat
and
said "...16 more like him and Workington would be in Super League."
Hally should be looking at a side pretty much unchanged from last week.
A
superb showing across the field has rekindled optimism amongst
supporters.
Marlon Billy's return to join high-speed Casey Mayberry on the flanks
gives
Hornets some real firepower out wide. And, to be fair, James Bunyan did
a
fantastic job at centre last week on both attack and defence, so we
hope he
retains his place.
Up front, pick of the pack last week were Andy 'Grunt' Grundy and Matt
Long.
Both of them took the Leigh six on with no quarter given and ToWn will
have
their hands full on Sunday.
No doubt Martin will be scratching his head over the problem number six
shirt. Whilst Ayresey tries hard - too hard sometimes - he lacks the
incision that will capitalise on Watson's quality. Watch this space for
progress, I guess.
It's be good to see more than the usual handful of Hornets fans at
Workington. I know it's a long way, but it really does give the lads a
lift
to know that they're not up there on their own.
So come on, make a day of it. Put three mates in the car and go and
watch
Hornets win. We'll be stood on the main stand side to the right of the
tunnel - so come and stand with us and we'll try and make a bit of
noise.
You know it makes sense - see you there.
