Our Man in Sydney
Newtown flies the flag for Hornets
The Sydney branch of the Rochdale Hornets Supporters' Club has been making the headlines recently.
Press reports of the recent US Tomahawks game against Australian foundation club Newtown Jets have all spotted what is rapidly becoming the most famous banner in world RL .
Reporters from both hemispheres were surprised to see a Rochdale Hornets banner proudly displayed during the recent game at Henson Park - see picture left - and much conjecture has been offered as to the source of this. Well, now we can explain everything.
The Rochdale Hornets banner is proudly flown at all games at Henson Park - and many other major fixtures down-under - by Australian Hornets fan James Freund, who followed Hornets during his two year stint over here in the UK.
Having returned to his home country, he continues to display his pride in Hornets when he watches his local side in action. And the banner's become quite a talking point.
On our trip to Sydney last year, we made a pilgrimage to Newtown to see the Jets in action against Manly - and we were made warmly welcome by officials at Henson Park who were delighted to meet representatives of the club from twelve and a half thousand miles away whose banner is flown week-in-week-out at their games.
It's a great bond between two tradional foundation clubs that embodies the spirit and camerarderie of Rugby League worldwide.
Here's to a great a season for both of our clubs. Onward Hornets Onward - Go the Jets!
