STAN TOWNSEND previews this weekend's Buddies National League Cup quarterfinals and Northern Ford Premiership game.LEIGH CENTURIONS v HULL KR
LIVELY Leigh were boosted by the news that their classy full-back Neil Turley had rejected a moved to Tetley's Super League neighbours Warrington Wolves.
And with that news setting the town of Leigh alight coach Paul Terzis will be able to call upon a virtually full strength side for their home Buddies Cup quarterfinal clash with Hull KR.
Apart from Dave Ingram (knee) and Paul Norman (shoulder) coach Paul Terzis is certain to name a strong side that could include halfbacks Simon Svabic and Lee Sanderson.
Terzis said: "Neil has shown a great deal of commitment to the club and that's a massive lift for us."
Hull KR have seven players back from injury as coach Gary Wilkinson seeks to clinch a semi-final place.
Lynton Stott, Alasdair McClarron, Dane Dorahy, Craig Murdock, Mike Dixon, Paul Fletcher and Chris Charles are all added to Wilkinson's team plans.
"Make no mistake, Leigh are a top class side and perhaps they deserve to be in the Super League, which will make it that much more difficult to get a win over there,'' said Wilkinson.
OLDHAM v HUDDERSFIELD GIANTS
WITH Phil Farrell out of the equation and prop Danny Guest set to undergo a late fitness test, Oldham could be stretched to the limit in their Buddies Cup quarterfinal game against top favourites Huddersfield.
Coach John Harbin believes that home advantage could sway things in their favour, but he also knows the potential of the Yorkshire side.
"They aren't at the top of the Northern Ford Premiership for any other reason except that they deserve to be there. They are proving to be the team to beat and a very difficult one at that,'' said Harbin, who has seen his side lose twice to the Giants already this season.
Will it be third time lucky?
"We will be doing our best to achieve a win,'' confirmed Harbin, who will also be without winger Joey Hayes for at least another two weeks.
Huddersfield will select from a squad of 22, which suggests that they have a clean bill of health.
Coach Tony Smith has named ex-Halifax prop Mick Slicker in the squad following a three-month lay-off with a badly broken jaw and, according to Smith, Slicker will get a game.
"He's in there with a big chance of playing at some stage, but I haven't decided what my line-up will be as yet,'' said Smith, who will be careful not to under-estimate Oldham's ambitions.
With the Ashton United ground having a small capacity, it has been deemed an all-ticket match, and Huddersfield apparently sold out their share of 700 within hours of receiving them from Oldham.
WHITEHAVEN v BARROW RAIDERS
THIS all-Cumbrian quarterfinal clash has been marred through injuries to several key players from both clubs.
Whitehaven have lost ex-Barrow winger Glen Hutton, whose on-loan stay has been cut short by a bad knee injury.
Coach Paul Cullen was upset to learn that Hutton may need an operation after he fell badly in his first tackle of the game against Swinton.
Hutton was standing in for Whitehaven's other injured winger Leigh Smith.
''That takes out injury list back to seven first teamers,'' said Cullen as he counted the cost of his team's shock defeat by the Lions last weekend.
"We were relieved to be in the bag when the draw was made. That was a poor performance against Swinton and was very reminiscent of our defeat at Chorley earlier in the season,'' said Cullen, who will no doubt remind his players of their intentions ahead of Sunday's game.
Barrow too are struggling with injuries and appear to have lost marauding prop Ian Rawlinson for another long spell. Rawlinson was set to return from a knee injury, but broke down in training.
"It's a bitter blow,'' said coach Cameron Bell, who may take a chance in playing Dave Clark, now that he is back in full training with the Raiders.
Northern Ford Premiership
HUNSLET HAWKS v CHORLEY LYNX
HAWKS boss Roy Sampson will run fitness checks on several of his key players ahead of their re-arranged Northern Ford Premiership game with Chorley and if they are decalred fit the will be included along with utility player Dave Jessey.
Chorley have new on-loan signing Kevin Crouthers from Warrington Wolves in their line-up and will be searching for their second league away win of their season.
But Safraz Patel and Dean Cross, who both figured in the shock win over Workington Town last week may need fitness tests if they are to make the kick-off, while Chris Ramsdale is a definite non-starter after breaking a foot in a freak training accident.
