The Hull K.R. prop has spent the weekend in intensive care, and underwent an operation to remove blood clots from his brain. But his condition is now described as stable.
The incident took place after Aston, 25, had attended a fund-raising event for Rovers' Academy side.
"The Police are investigating, and they thought on Friday night that they were investigating a murder, it was that touch and go," Rovers' Chairman Wayne Smith said yesterday.
"They did have somebody in custody on Saturday. It seems that Jon was attacked, and it doesn't appear that he was in a mass brawl, or anything like that.
"There's nothing concrete at the moment, because they're still gathering evidence, but it looks as though he took a strike to the back of his head. Apparently the Police have said that there were a few witnesses.
"He had a good night's rest on Saturday night, and the signs are that he is coming through OK.
"They took him off the sedation in order to test all his reflexes, and he was very active. He has since got back on the sedatives to let his brain rest, but on Sunday morning they were starting to take the drugs away.
"We don't know if Jon will make a full recovery yet, but, fingers crossed, everyone is hoping he will. The signs at the moment are very, very positive.
"The mood at the club is sombre, and having to go and play a game of rugby doesn't seem that important any more."
Aston's girlfriend Emma is four months pregnant, and the club is keeping in close contact with her as his progress is monitored.
The Robins' website message board has been flooded with goodwill messages for Aston, who has also played with Hull and Rochdale Hornets.
"He's a smashing kid and very popular with everyone," Smith added.
"Our thoughts are with his family, and everyone is just hoping he is OK."
