Sunday's Coming
With two wins already this term, the same points as Oldham and just
two less than Hornets' recent conquerors Dewsbury, Chorley are well on
their way to shrugging off their 'whipping boys' tag.
As suspected prior to the pre-season game, Graeme West's blend of experience,
youth and players with a point to prove will rock a few boats this season
- and as Whitehaven and Swinton found out, complacency will cost you against
this new, more durable Lynx.
This new-found resilience has been evident in the Challenge Cup; first
disposing of amateurs Redhill - where previously they could have been expected
to make an early exit - then going down by just 14 points to Union Treiziste
Catalan - the new pacesetters in French 'League.
In fact, Westy's team of grafters contains enough players to cause lots
of teams problems.
Former Leigh dynamo Safraz Patel gives then guile and craft around
the rucks, ex-Hornet Phil 'Beef' Harrison gives them relentless go-forward,
the work-rate of Wayne Bloor at 13 provides momentum on attack and defence.
But what gives them real steel is the inclusion in their ranks of Mr
Timothy Street. With a long career - somewhat overshadowed by his
uncompromising approach - he brings experience, nous and one of the most
under-rated pairs of hands in the game. His vision and close-offloading
game have unzipped many a Hornets defence in the past. Add to that an aggressive
physical presence and a never-say-die attitude and you have one of the
NFP's most potent forces. Be sure, our pack will have to be right on top
of its game to contain him - and the exchanges with Paul 'Panto-Genie'
Davidson should be worth the admission money alone.
As for Hornets, we've had two stinkers on the trot and need a cohesive
performance to restore confidence in both players and supporters alike.
Complacency cost us at Dewsbury whilst appaling ball control and an unimaginative
attack saw us fizzle out against Leigh.
With a vital game against Oldham now looming large on the Horizon, it's
imperative that Hornets get back on track. And if they're to succeed conviningly,
your support is vital. See you there.
