Sunday's Coming
Last season was no fun for the long-suffering Wasps fans. As the club
fell slowly apart amidst falling attendances, record defeats and a complete
loss of confidence, many wondered if they'd actually make it to the end
of the season.
Now, having ditched last season's coach, squad and debts, York have
started again from scratch. But whilst their slate remains resolutely clean
- anchored in their now customary bottom position five games in - there
are signs of recovery at Monk's Cross with last week's attendance creeping
over 1,000 for the first time in a while.
Despite having lost five out of five already, the huge tonkings of last
season seem to be abating, with the last two games creditable defeats against
Hull KR and the pikeys from Ashton.
New coach, former Wests Magpies utility back Leo Epifania, has some
quality players to work with. Most notable are the two Kiwis Peter
Edwards and Carl Hall - both previously with Doncaster. Their experience
and obvious ability to connive and clobber respectively will provide Epifania
with the perfect foundation on which to mould his other 11 new signings
into a competitive unit.
At fullback, Jamie Benn caused problems for Hull KR last week with his
nifty kicking game while out half Johny Liddell ran things in the middle
of the field, capitalising on Benn's kicking to score the Wasps' only try.
But it's Hall and Edwards who'll cause most sides problems this season.
Carl Hall's a great huge battering ram of a centre - that rare beast that
can actually run his substantial weight - while Edwards' perpetual motion
style around the rucks is backed up by a steely defence. Be assured, give
these guys a yard and they'll help themselves to another 30. However, three key players are likely to be missing from the York line-up on Sunday and Carl Hall is among them, Neil Bennett and Ben Sorbello making up the trio.
As for Hornets, a point at Leigh last week should give them the confidence
to kick on and really grab the season by the throat. Last season's visit
by York saw the records tumble as we ran in 98 unanswered points and we
should be looking to register a decent score this time too. While York
have undoubtedly improved, so have we and if we play to our full potential
we could have a great game on our hands. Points difference could play a
major part in the placings at the end of the season so Hornets should view
this one as an opportunity to play some football and rack up the points.
Hornets should be pretty much as we were last week, with the only doubt
being Dave Stephenson who has a face full of stitches and a badly swollen
eye. Martin will be assessing the improvement in his injury over the next
few days, but could well err on the side of caution. Similarly, Hally will
be keeping a close watch on Marlon Billy who hobbled off late in the Leigh
game.
Given Hornets unbeaten start, this game gives us a great chance to gain
a momentum that would stand us in good stead through the season. York will
come and scrap for every yard, but with your support, Hornets could well
log their best win of the season. If you - or someone you know - hasn't
been for a while, this is a great game to get back into the habit with.
And if you come every week, bring a mate on Sunday and help to boost the
gate and create a great atmosphere.
And if you fancy a challenge try this - the Biffs got 1,130 against
York. Let's see if we can beat them one more time. With so much potential
in our side, every game this season is a cracker waiting to happen. This
one's no different - you'd be barmy to miss it.
