| Hamilton jumps the gun | 18/05/2001 | In the News | |
Rochdale football have rubbished reports that Oldham Rugby League team will play at Spotland this summer.
Oldham chairman Chris Hamilton told the local press (Saturday's Ob has now had to be changed) that he expected his club's remaining games to be played in Rochdale. The Spotland pitch is due to undergo extensive work in the summer, which would be delayed if matches were still being played. Dale fans reacted furiously after Hamilton, whose Oldham side are set to play Workington at Rochdale, told the Oldham Chronicle: "In short, all our remaining games will be played at Spotland." Rochdale director Graham Morris was quick to deny that Oldham would be able to use the pitch for more than one game. He said: "An agreement has been struck with Oldham Rugby League that will allow them to play only one game on Spotland against Workington Town. "They have agreed to pay £2,500 for this privilege and all of that money will go directly towards pitch renovations. "We have major pitch renovations planned for mid-June and no games will take place after this for obvious reasons. "Oldham have completely jumped the gun in terms of playing any other games at Spotland and it is simply not true. "We have an agreement with them and it only covers their game this weekend," he told the club's official website. Hamilton then retracted his earlier comments after telephone conversation with Morris. He said: "I've completely jumped the gun in presuming we could play the rest of our games at Spotland. "I just took it for granted and I can only apologise for this," he told the club's official website. | |||
